DUTIES:
The Food Service! Worker serves within the Nutrition and Food Service Department located at the VA Medical Center, Lexington, KY, but will work at a two-divisional teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Kentucky Medical Center. This position will rotate between both locations, Cooper Drive Division and the Leestown Road Division. The Food Service Worker is responsible for performing a full range of duties for the expediting, shipping and receiving of all diet ticket orders for the patients and patient wards. The major duties and responsibilities include:

Receiving and processing diet changes utilizing the computer;

Running all necessary reports, including the Patient Census, Standing Orders, NPO/Hold, Early/Late orders;

Processing and implementing all diet orders by changing, deleting or adding tray tickets;

Utilizing the computer for printing labels for diet cards, supplemental feeding, and tube feedings;

Inventorying nursing stock ! of commercial tube feedings, supplemental feedings and bulk feedings to! makes necessary adjustments for ordering;

Acting as accuracy controller by checking trays at mealtimes for attractiveness, accuracy and conformity;

Communicating with dietitians and providing pertinent information regarding diet orders;

Preparing light or precooked food items when necessary;

Maintaining established food temperatures, food service safety, and sanitation standards;

Housekeeping and sanitation of all areas assigned; and

Performs other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Sunday - Saturday, with rotating tours from 5:30am - 2:00pm, and 11:15am - 7:45pm

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Physical effort and work conditions

: Physical Effort: Work requires constant walking, standing, bending, stooping and moderate (45 pounds) to heavy (50 pounds) lifting. Must be able to move advanced food delivery carts (AFD) that weigh up to 575 pounds; properly use a cart tugger puller to assist in AFD cart movement. Work may be repetitive for short periods of time. The incumbent may be required to perform heavy work, such as scouring and scrubbing large-size cooking utensils and pushing heavy carts and trucks in unloading, storing, and delivering supplies. May be required to work on ladders and use power-cleaning equipment including a steam wand. May be required to use safety devices, equipment will be provided for the completion of some tasks such as tuggers, shoes, gloves, disposable gowns, masks, and coats.

Work Conditions: The work is performed in kitchen areas where the steam and hea! t from cooking and dishwashing equipment often cause uncomfortable high temperatures and humidity. The work area is well lighted but usually noisy from food service activities, and there is a danger of slipping on floors where food or beverages have been dropped. Incumbent is regularly exposed to hot liquids, sharp cutting blades, hot cooking and re-thermalization surfaces and extreme temperature changes when entering walk-in refrigeration and freezer units. Incumbent is routinely exposed to chemicals used for sanitation in food service areas. Incumbent is routinely exposed to all types of weather conditions when moving between buildings.
