St. Anthony's Hospice is a leader in providing quality, compassionate end-of-life care in Henderson, Union and Webster counties in Kentucky. Hospice care is provided in a variety of settings including individual homes, nursing homes and our inpatient hospice facility-the Lucy Smith King Care Center. Team members may be assigned to one or multiple care settings.
St. Anthony’s Hospice is seeking Registered Nurses or Licensed Practical Nurses -full time & PRN at our inpatient hospice facility â€" the Lucy Smith King Care Center. The full time RN/LPN position (NIGHTS) in our inpatient facility is 72 hours every two weeks, 12 hour shifts, 6:30 p.m. t! o 7:00 a.m. with every third weekend and holiday rotation.
PRN RNs/LPNs are needed for 12 hour shifts (WEEKEND DAYS). PRN staff are those who work on an as-needed basis without a specific guarantee of hours each week. Because St. Anthony’s promotes from within the organization, PRN positions provide you the best opportunity for future part time or full time hours.

Classification: Non-Exempt (full time, part time or PRN)
Reports To: Lucy Smith King Care Center Director
Position Summary: The RN/LPN is responsible for planning, coordinating, providing and documenting care for terminally ill patients from day of admission through day of discharge. Utilizing physicians’ orders and professional skills, the Hospice RN develops and implements a hospice Plan of Care that meets each patient’s specific needs and is in compliance with federal and state regulations as well as St. Anthony’s standards and policies.

Essential Job! Functions:
1. Provides physical and psychosocial assessments on assigned hospice patients.
2. Assesses patient’s condition, initiates plan of care, re-evaluates and updates as necessary.
3. Provides hospice level nursing care in conjunction with Medicare Conditions of Participation and hospice regulations and standards.
4. Obtains all necessary physician orders and collaborates with physician as patient’s needs dictate.
5. Provides examinations, care and treatments including but not limited to measuring vitals, catheter and colostomy care, care of wounds, pressure sores and stasis ulcers, respiratory care, enterable feedings, care of central venous access devices, use of PCA-CADD pumps, and post mortem care.
6. Administers medications based on ages of the patient and the patient’s clinical position.
7. Orders needed medications, supplies, and equipment and observes and documents its’ use and effectiveness towards the goal of the pati! ent’s comfort and safety.
8. Assesses/reassess pain, utilizes pai! n management techniques and carries out the pain/symptom management plan to keep the patient as comfortable as possible.
9. Instructs the patient/family members in patient safety; explains medications, treatments, and procedures; provides information regarding the disease process including death and dying.
10.Responds to the physical, mental, social and emotional needs of terminally ill patients and their families.
11.Initiates case conferences to discuss multidisciplinary team responsibilities, pain management, bereavement counseling, new problems, etc.
12.Completes clinical documentation that supports daily tasks and patient’s Plan of Care.
13.Communicates with patients, families, physicians and team members to share and elicit information related to patient care and treatment.
14.Participates in staff meetings, inservices, special team meetings, etc. as assigned or requested by the LSKCC Director.
15.Completes other duties as assigned.
Professional Qualifications:

  • Must be a Registered Nurse in the State of Kentucky
  • Previous nursing experience is required. Experience preferably in Hospice or in a medical/surgical setting, a hospital, oncology or geriatric facility.
  • Familiarly with the use of computers preferred including internet navigation and email use.
  • Must demonstrate commitment to Hospice concept of care.
  • Must meet all legal and regulatory requirements of both federal and state governments as well as Medicare Hospice Conditions of Participation and JCAHO.
Physical Qualifications:
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position to complete patient documentation.
  • Must be able to frequently move throughout the LSKCC to attend to the needs of patients and families.
  • Must be able to communicate verbally, via email and in writing with patients, families, nursing staff, physicians and visitors.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds and push/pull 50 pounds, 8-12 times pe! r day to perform essential job functions of bathing, transferring and providing general patient care.
  • Regularly exposed to blood, body fluids, cleaning chemicals and other potentially harmful substances while caring for patients and completing housekeeping duties. Must be able to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Must be able to use medical equipment and devices needed to care for and treat patients.
  • Must be able to operate a computer and basic office equipment.
